Romanian energy minister urges stronger partnership with Azerbaijan to boost energy security

13 December 2024 12:32

Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian-Ioan Burduja has underscored the importance of strengthening energy security through a closer partnership with Azerbaijan.

Burduja acknowledged the public's growing concerns over high energy costs, highlighting that citizens have expressed their desire for lower household energy prices through calls, letters, and media statements, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The private sector is similarly invested in affordable energy, as it directly impacts the competitiveness of industrial enterprises.

In his remarks, Burduja also emphasized that both Romania and Azerbaijan are at a similar stage in their energy transition journey. While both countries continue to rely on fossil fuels, they are making significant strides in investing in renewable energy sources.

Romania has already launched projects aimed at generating 10,000 megawatts of solar and wind energy, and Azerbaijan has similarly ambitious plans.

The minister highlighted that through the "green corridor," both nations stand to benefit from maximizing the potential of clean energy.

He added that the partnership would ultimately lead to enhanced energy security, increased competitiveness, and a greater share of green energy in the energy mix over the long term.

To recap, Romania's top media outlets have highlighted Azerbaijan's contribution to European energy security, featuring comments from Romanian Minister of Energy, Sebastian-Ioan Burduja.

In an interview, Burduja discussed Romania's growing role in the European energy sector, noting the country's expanding economy and favourable investment climate. He emphasized that cooperation with Azerbaijan, particularly through projects like the STRING project—aimed at transporting Azerbaijani gas to Romania and neighbouring countries—could reshape Europe’s energy landscape.

The minister also highlighted the importance of the ‘Green Corridor’ project, which will involve an undersea cable for electricity transport, and a new LNG terminal in the Caspian Sea. These initiatives, he stated, are crucial for energy security, supply diversification, and stabilizing the regional market.
