Russia open to dialogue with Georgia amid strained relations - Speaker
Valentina Matvienko, Chair of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, expressed the Kremlin's willingness to engage in dialogue with Georgia.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of worsening relations between Georgia and its Western allies due to the controversial foreign agents law and concerns over Georgia’s democratic trajectory, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media outlet.
Matvienko acknowledged the absence of current contacts, attributing it to ongoing political upheavals in Georgia, where many issues are being reassessed. She highlighted the significance of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia this October, noting that the outcome will shape the country’s economic, social, and political future.
Despite the lack of diplomatic relations, Matvienko stated, “If there is a desire for dialogue on the part of Georgia, we are ready even now.” She emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in rebuilding bridges and fostering friendship, suggesting that parliamentarians have a vital role in this process.
Matvienko also underscored the longstanding cultural and humanitarian ties between Russia and Georgia, citing the many Russian tourists who visit Georgia and appreciate its culture, cuisine, and historical sites. She stressed that the Georgian people remain close and friendly to Russians. However, she acknowledged the significant external pressure being exerted on Georgia, noting that the final decision rests with the Georgian people as they approach their election campaign.
