Russian peacekeepers set up checkpoint on Armenian road PHOTO
Russian peacekeepers have put up a checkpoint on the Meghri-Agarak highway in Armenia's southern Syunik Region, where they stop cars and check citizens' documents before letting them pass.
"Armenian citizens have not been informed about the move in advance, nor has the government provided any explanation", Yerevan Today reported on August 8.
It said that this was already the third checkpoint in Syunik in addition to two Azerbaijani checkpoints on the Kapan-Chakaten and Goris-Kapan roads.
The report also said that the Armenian government was building a road bypassing the Noyemberyan highway in the northeast which would be handed over to Azerbaijan as part of the border delimitation with Armenia. The highway passes through Azerbaijani border villages that fell under Armenian control as a result of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in the early 1990s.
