Kazakhstan passes law mandating residence registration for long-term migrants

26 June 2025 17:29

The Senate of Kazakhstan’s Parliament has approved new legislative amendments requiring foreign nationals to register their place of residence if they intend to stay in the country for more than 30 days.

The law introduces significant changes to the national migration policy, mandating that all immigrants staying in Kazakhstan beyond 30 calendar days must officially register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs no later than the 30th day after crossing the state border, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The legislation includes an exemption for citizens of countries with which Kazakhstan has ratified bilateral or multilateral agreements on migration, effectively streamlining the process for nationals of those states.

Additionally, under the new law, migrants are obligated to update their registration within five working days if they change their place of residence while in the country.

The move is part of Kazakhstan’s broader efforts to tighten migration controls, enhance the accuracy of demographic data, and ensure better regulation of foreign residents within its borders.
