State Commission on Azerbaijan-Armenia Border Delimitation reaches key agreement

30 August 2024 11:32

The State Commission on the delimitation of the state border between Azerbaijan and Armenia has reached a key agreement on joint operations.

According to the Protocol of the 8th meeting of the State Commission on the delimitation of the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, and the Commission on the delimitation of the state border and border security issues between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, signed on April 19, 2024, the work on agreeing on the Regulation regarding the joint activities of the Commissions has been completed, Caliber.Az reports, citing the information provided by the State Commission on the Delimitation of the State Border between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Regulation concerning the joint activities of the Commissions was duly signed on August 30, 2024. Currently, both the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia have begun to carry out internal state procedures.

Baku and Yerevan started the process of delimitation of their border on April 23, 2024 with the installation of the first border markers based on geodetic measurements. As part of the delimitation and demarcation process, Armenia agreed to vacate four Azerbaijani border villages it has occupied since the early 1990s, when the two countries fought a bloody war over the Karabakh (Garabagh) region of Azerbaijan.

As previously reported, in accordance with the agreements that were reached following the 8th meeting of the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the delimitation of the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia and the Commission of the Republic of Armenia on the delimitation of the state border and border security between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, expert groups of two countries on the border of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia began the process of clarifying coordinates based on geodetic measurements on the ground.

As of April 29, 2024, more than half of the planned work has been completed, 35 border pillars have been installed. The work of expert groups of the two states continues.
