TAP AG considers electric compressors to boost efficiency, cut carbon emissions

04 April 2025 20:37

Managing Director of TAP AG Luca Schieppati has said that the TAP AG consortium is exploring the installation of electric compressors at both existing and future compressor stations along the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), aiming to reduce carbon emissions and further enhance the pipeline's efficiency.

Schieppati made these remarks during the recent ministerial meetings held in Baku as part of the Advisory Councils on the Southern Gas Corridor and Green Energy, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

He shared that the consortium is committed to reducing its carbon footprint as part of its Greenhouse Gas Emissions Management Plan, which runs through 2025. As part of this effort, TAP is considering the addition of electric compressors at current and future stations, especially in light of the pipeline system’s potential expansion.

"The implementation of this Greenhouse Gas Emissions Management Plan is vital in reducing emissions, and installing electric compressors at both operational and future compressor stations is a crucial step in achieving our environmental goals," Schieppati stated.

He further highlighted the strategic importance of TAP in contributing to Europe’s energy security and its transition towards a low-carbon future.

“TAP is fully committed to supporting Europe’s decarbonization efforts. By increasing the pipeline's capacity, we can play a significant role in helping the EU achieve its climate and energy targets. TAP is ready to support the energy transition, both in the short and long term,” he added.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline, a key element of the Southern Gas Corridor, began commercial operations on November 15, 2020. Stretching 878 kilometers, the pipeline runs through Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea, and Italy, carrying Azerbaijani gas to European markets. Since the start of operations, Azerbaijan has been exporting gas to Europe, with volumes expected to reach a minimum of 20 billion cubic meters per year by 2027, as per the agreement between Azerbaijan and the European Union. The first phase of the pipeline’s expansion will see Italy receiving 1 billion cubic meters, while Albania is set to receive 200 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas.
