Turkish minister: TurkStream attack would “mirror Strait of Hormuz disruption”
The consequences of a potential attack on the TurkStream gas pipeline would be comparable to the disruption caused by a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said in remarks to Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
Responding to a journalist’s question, Bayraktar warned that any attack on TurkStream would carry significant global and regional repercussions. “The consequences of an attack on TurkStream will, in one way or another, be comparable to the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz. We have already faced this after the sabotage of Nord Stream,” he said.
Bayraktar emphasised that there is no viable alternative to TurkStream should the pipeline be targeted. He noted that the infrastructure plays a critical role in supplying natural gas not only to Türkiye but also to several European countries.
The minister underscored that energy infrastructure should remain outside the scope of military or political conflicts. He cautioned that once such facilities are treated as legitimate targets, conflicts enter what he described as a “new chapter,” signalling an escalation with potentially far-reaching consequences for energy security.
