Türkiye completes major modernization of railway lines on Syrian border PHOTO
Türkiye has completed a large-scale modernization of the Karkamış – Nusaybin ve Şenyurt – Mardin railway lines along its border with Syria, covering a total distance of 350 kilometres.
The announcement was made by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, TRT Haber reports.
Uraloğlu said the upgraded section along the Syrian border was reopened to train traffic on March 31. He emphasized that the project went beyond routine repairs, describing it as a comprehensive modernization effort aimed at resolving long-standing infrastructure problems.
Under the works, railway infrastructure and stations were fully renewed, with damaged sections restored, including areas affected by floods and other natural disasters. The project also included strengthening the track foundation, upgrading platforms, and improving drainage and engineering systems.
Special attention was given to bridges and other structural elements, with more than 2,500 bridge sleepers replaced and key structures reinforced, including the bridge in Karkamış.
Uraloğlu said the reopening of the lines would increase freight transport capacity, strengthen Türkiye’s logistics capabilities, and support regional integration. He added that the upgraded sections would also be incorporated into broader transport initiatives, including the planned Ovaköy–Nusaybin railway under the “Development Road” project.
