These operations are part of Türkiye's broader strategy to combat terrorism in the region, with a particular focus on dismantling PKK terrorist networks that often operate in northern Iraq to launch cross-border attacks into Turkish territory.
Since its founding, the PKK – designated as a terrorist organisation by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 individuals, including civilians, women, children, and the elderly. The YPG is its Syrian offshoot.
