Türkiye's new envoy to Azerbaijan pledges closer ties and enhanced cooperation
Birol Akgün, the newly appointed Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan, has reaffirmed his commitment to fostering stronger cooperation and fraternal ties between the two nations.
Ambassador Akgün shared this sentiment on his official X account, per Caliber.Az.
“As part of this honourable mission, I will work to enhance the development of cooperation and the brotherly, allied relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan in all spheres, guided by the principle of ‘one nation, two states’,” he emphasized.
Akgün expressed his gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan for entrusting him with the role of ambassador to Azerbaijan.
The decision to appoint Birol Akgün as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan was announced in early December. Before assuming this role, Akgün served as chairman of the Turkish Educational Foundation Maarif Vakfı.
He succeeds Cahit Bağcı, who has held the position since 2021.
President Erdogan recently approved the appointment of new ambassadors to several countries, including Azerbaijan. The decision, effective as of January 11, was published in Türkiye’s official gazette, Resmi Gazete.
Alongside Akgün's appointment, Türkiye announced changes to its diplomatic missions in Germany, Jordan, the UAE, Mozambique, and Cuba.
