Türkiye to launch regional positioning system to boost space presence

07 April 2025 18:11

Türkiye is set to create a regional positioning and synchronization system to reduce its external dependence on strategic infrastructures and strengthen its presence in space.

Additionally, a local map and navigation application are being developed, which will be used internationally, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

According to data gathered by Türkiye's Ministry of Industry and Technology from the "Industry and Technology Strategy for 2030," the widespread use of automation in industrial production and the increase in connected devices and systems pose cybersecurity risks.

To reduce Türkiye's reliance on external strategic infrastructures and enhance its space presence, a regional positioning and synchronization system will be launched. This system will provide Turkey with accurate location, navigation, and timing data through its own satellites, serving as an alternative to global systems like GPS.

The system will cover everything from military operations' security to the smooth operation of civilian communication networks and intelligent transportation. It will perform critical functions in various fields, including precision agriculture applications.

In this direction, preliminary feasibility studies, the development of atomic clocks, and improvements to the durability of existing satellite systems are underway. Research is being conducted to enhance the system, with the ultimate goal of creating a regional satellite positioning system.
