Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees in peace deal with Russia German minister says
Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock stated that Berlin and its European partners believe Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees as part of any peace agreement with Russia.
She emphasised that Ukraine's allies are united in the view that Kyiv needs security guarantees as part of the peace process, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
"Here, we are unanimous: Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. This includes long-term military and financial support for Ukraine. We stand for the security and future of our European continent," Baerbock said ahead of a meeting with foreign ministers from several European countries.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron called for close cooperation with the US in the effort to end the conflict in Ukraine on terms that would safeguard the interests of both Europe and Kyiv. He emphasised that there can be no peace on the continent without the involvement of Europeans. Macron also highlighted the importance of coordination among the countries when it comes to formulating security guarantees for Ukraine.
In turn, NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte mentioned a small issue when discussing peace efforts for Ukraine. While commenting on the public debates and disagreements among Kyiv's allies regarding the terms of a potential peace agreement for Ukraine, Rutte stated that these discussions appear very favourable to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, even though he is not at the negotiating table. Rutte emphasised that the West is being overly open in discussing what a potential agreement between Moscow and Kyiv might look like.
