UN: Azerbaijan makes progress in mine clearance, reconstruction of liberated territories
Azerbaijan has made notable strides in mine clearance, reconstruction, and socio-economic development of liberated areas, according to Kanako Mabuchi, Head of the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Azerbaijan.
Mabuchi noted that the United Nations continues to support Azerbaijan’s efforts in post-conflict recovery, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“We will maintain our partnership in this direction and remain committed to accelerating Azerbaijan’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” she emphasized.
Mabuchi highlighted the critical importance of mine clearance as a prerequisite for the safe return, reintegration, and rehabilitation of displaced persons.
“The UN’s support includes mine clearance, livelihood assistance for returning displaced persons, provision of social services, legal aid, environmental restoration, and energy efficiency initiatives,” she concluded.
Note that, the total number of mine victims in Azerbaijan has risen to 3,460, including 359 children and 38 women, according to the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).
Between 1991 and November 10, 2020, 2,418 people were injured by mines, with 530 fatalities and 131 injuries caused by cluster munitions. This brought the total number of mine-related casualties during this period to 3,079.
Since November 10, 2020, an additional 381 casualties have been recorded, including 70 fatalities.
Following the liberation of Azerbaijani territories from Armenian occupation, credible reports suggest Armenia deliberately planted landmines in these areas, posing a severe threat to civilians and hindering the return of displaced populations.
