US pledges support to Georgia’s EU ambitions under Trump administration
The relationship between the United States and Georgia is set to improve under the administration of President Donald Trump, with the US promising to assist Georgia in reopening its negotiations with the European Union.
Kimberly Lowe, who is likely to become the special representative of the Trump administration to the EU, made the announcement, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media
Earlier, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze had stated that the country would suspend its bid to open EU accession talks until 2028, a decision which sparked significant protests.
He clarified that Georgia would continue fulfilling its commitments under the EU Association Agreement and that by 2028, the country would be economically prepared to begin negotiations for EU membership by 2030.
“We know that with the arrival of the new Trump administration, the situation will improve, and we are here to help you reopen these negotiations. The current Prime Minister wants to continue working towards EU membership, and we want to support you in joining the EU, and we have a way to make that happen,” Lowe remarked.
Lowe further highlighted the confusion among other countries regarding Georgia’s EU accession process and the reasons why the negotiations had been suspended.
“From what I understand, your current government did not want to end these talks, but there were many issues that led to a deterioration in US-Georgian relations,” she explained.
In her interview, Lowe also praised Georgia for the progress it has made in recent years, particularly in improving its economy and strengthening democracy, congratulating the country on the steps it has taken towards EU membership.
