US professor: Azerbaijan set to make significant progress in renewable energy usage
Professor at the US Naval Postgraduate School and member of the American Political Science Association Brenda Shaffer has stated that Azerbaijan, known for its innovative approach, is poised for significant success in utilizing both traditional and renewable energy sources.
“Azerbaijan has consistently demonstrated innovation and a pragmatic approach to energy matters. The country possesses abundant fossil fuel reserves—oil and natural gas—as well as wind and solar energy resources. The optimal strategy is to leverage all available energy forms,” Shaffer told the local media, Caliber.Az reports.
She pointed out that numerous countries focusing on renewable energy development often continue to rely on coal, leading to significant environmental pollution that compromises their renewable energy initiatives. Azerbaijan aims to showcase an advanced model combining natural gas and renewable energy sources, which minimizes pollution and emissions.
"I believe this model is crucial for global attention," the professor added.
Azerbaijan has been gradually developing its renewable energy sector, aiming to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Azerbaijan has identified significant potential for wind energy, particularly along its Caspian Sea coastline and in mountainous regions. Several wind farms have been constructed, with plans for further expansion.
The country enjoys abundant sunshine, making solar energy a promising renewable resource. Solar projects, including both large-scale installations and distributed solar systems, are being implemented to harness this potential.
Azerbaijan has utilized its rivers and water resources for hydropower generation for many years. There are ongoing efforts to modernize existing hydropower plants and explore new small-scale hydro projects.
The Azerbaijani government has introduced various incentives and policies to support renewable energy development. These include feed-in tariffs, tax incentives, and regulatory frameworks to attract investment in the sector.
Azerbaijan has engaged in partnerships and collaborations with international organisations and countries to further advance its renewable energy goals. This includes participating in regional energy initiatives and signing agreements to promote renewable energy projects.
