Washington's hand in Yerevan: Armenian military insider confirms US presence at Zvartnots Denials by Ambassador Libby unraveled

28 August 2024 17:56

Armenian military expert Hayk Nahapetyan has corroborated reports of US military planes arriving at Zvartnots airport, shedding light on the influence of external forces on Armenia's strategic decisions. Speaking to Armenian media, Nahapetyan asserted that key issues of Armenia’s national security and foreign policy are determined in Washington, not Yerevan.

Nahapetyan highlighted that decisions such as Armenia's potential exit from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the conduct of Armenian-American military exercises are made by the US, not locally.

Although these statements might seem straightforward, they carry significant implications for understanding the true state of Armenian politics.

Of particular note is Nahapetyan's claim that "the airspace over the Zangezur corridor is now open, allowing Western transit." He added that following the withdrawal of Russian border guards from Zvartnots airport, NATO military planes, including American ones, have begun arriving in Armenia.

Caliber.Az has repeatedly reported on the delivery of weapons and personnel via military transport planes, a claim now confirmed by Armenian military experts. Nahapetyan's comments are particularly striking when compared to the earlier denials by US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mark Libby, who had firmly rejected any notion of arms deliveries to Armenia. The ambassador later had to revise his position, arguing that the US did not supply lethal weapons. This adjustment has only increased scepticism about the credibility of his earlier statements. It turned out that they did supply weapons (which Caliber.Az is absolutely sure of), but, according to the ambassador's peculiar classification, they are considered non-lethal.

So, who is talking "nonsense", Mr. Ambassador?
