West Chirag platform yields 251 million barrels of oil since launch BP-Azerbaijan says
A total of 251 million barrels of oil, equivalent to 34 million tonnes, have been produced since the start of operations from the “West Chirag” platform at the Azeri–Chirag–Gunashli (ACG) field block in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
BP-Azerbaijan told local media that to date, 35 wells have been drilled on the platform, including 26 oil-producing wells, one gas-producing well, seven injection wells, and one well intended for reinjecting drilling waste back into the reservoir.
The company noted that first production from the “West Chirag” platform began 12 years ago.
“This success is based on a strong partnership with the government of Azerbaijan, the State Oil Company SOCAR and other partners, as well as the high professionalism and dedication of the platform’s personnel,” BP-Azerbaijan emphasised.
It should be noted that ACG is Azerbaijan’s largest block of oil fields. The first production sharing agreement for the development of the field block was signed on September 20, 1994. On September 14, 2017, a new agreement on the joint operation of these fields and the sharing of production was signed, providing for their development through the end of 2049.
Ownership stakes in ACG are held by BP (30.37%), SOCAR (31.65%), MOL Group (9.57%), INPEX (9.31%), ExxonMobil (6.79%), TPAO (5.73%), ITOCHU (3.65%), and ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) (2.92%).
