Western Azerbaijan Community demands Armenia to stop ecoterrorism
The Western Azerbaijan Community has called on the international community to take urgent decisive steps and exert maximum pressure on Armenia, whose government is carrying out actions aimed at making the territories to which Azerbaijanis should return uninhabitable.
"Zangazur copper and molybdenum plant in Gajaran and mining plant in Gafan emit waste containing heavy metals such as chromium, nickel, copper, molybdenum, zinc, aluminium, vanadium, and lead. This pollution directly affects the Ohchuchay and Araz rivers in Azerbaijan, jeopardising the health of the population in the region,” Caliber.Az quotes the community as saying in a statement.
"In addition, the Akarak (Agarak) copper and molybdenum smelter through the Karchivanchai River pollutes the Araz River with mining wastes containing heavy metals. The Goychan (Kegarkunik) copper smelter emits large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas and other pollutants causing air pollution and acid rain. The Zod River is polluted with dangerous heavy metals such as copper, iron, cadmium, and molybdenum. These examples are clear evidence that Armenia is committing destructive acts precisely in the territories where Azerbaijanis once densely lived.
This indifferent attitude of the Armenian government towards nature shows how low it is willing to stoop legally and morally in order to prevent the return of Azerbaijani refugees and continue its policy of ethnic cleansing.
We call on the international community to take decisive steps against Armenia's criminal actions, which are contrary to that country's obligations under international conventions in the field of environmental protection," the statement says.
