Western Azerbaijan Community slams Canada for seeking to rekindle conflict in region
The Western Azerbaijan Community has strongly condemned the statement made by Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, accusing her of bias and defamation against Azerbaijan.
"The Canadian minister made unfounded accusations claiming that Armenians were allegedly forced to leave the Karabakh region," Caliber.Az quotes the community as saying in the statement.
They asserted that such a position undermines Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and contributes to regional tensions.
“Canada, which turns a blind eye to the ethnic cleansing of one million Azerbaijanis by Armenia, which has kept Azerbaijani territories under occupation for thirty years and does not allow hundreds of thousands of Western Azerbaijanis to return to their native lands, has no moral right to talk about humanitarian issues,” the statement read.
The community emphasised that Canada's stance reflects a refusal to recognise Azerbaijan's restoration of its sovereignty and territorial integrity: "This statement indicates that Canada seeks to rekindle conflict in the region.”
“We would like to inform Melanie Joly, who talks about the principle of ‘self-determination’ for the solution of a problem that does not exist anymore, that this principle is relevant in the issue of returning Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia to their homeland and ensuring their rights,” the statement said.
The community also demanded that "the Canadian government withdraw this statement and show respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, the right of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia to return safely to their homeland."
