Baku summons Iranian envoy, urging Tehran to end anti-Azerbaijan campaign
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has summoned Iranian Ambassador Seyid Abbas Mousavi, urging Iran to end the anti-Azerbaijan campaign.
During the meeting on November 11, the opposite side was informed about the displeasure and concern with the recent anti-Azerbaijan propaganda, the smear campaign, as well as the threatening rhetoric of Iran’s high-ranking political and military leadership, which is not in line with the spirit of the two nations' ties, Caliber.Az reports citing the ministry.
The inadmissibility of the settlement of Azerbaijani citizens, who have committed crimes against the country’s constitutional structure and thereby were placed on international search by the court decision, and the necessity of handing over the criminals, was once again mentioned.
Receiving individuals at Iranian embassies who encourage separatism in Azerbaijan and who are hiding abroad to avoid trial is an “unfriendly” step, the ministry said.
It was highlighted that spreading false information and engaging in activities hostile to Azerbaijan in Iran are unacceptable and must stop as soon as possible.
Similarly, the Azerbaijani ambassador was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry on November 10, the ministry reported.
During the session, the Iranian foreign minister’s assistant and director general of the Ministry’s Eurasia Department conveyed Iran’s strong protest at and dissatisfaction with the "unfriendly" remarks of Azerbaijan’s top officials and Azeri media’s "smear campaign" to Baku’s envoy.
“We expect an end to this trend as soon as possible and the adoption of necessary measures to prevent a repetition,” the Iranian official said.
Azerbaijan’s ambassador expressed regret over the current situation and said he would relay the Islamic Republic’s protest to Baku swiftly.
