Swiss Re Europe forecast: Average temperature in Azerbaijan to rise by about 5%

20 June 2024 12:57

The average air temperature in Azerbaijan is forecast to rise by about 5 per cent until 2090 due to emissions.

The remarks came from Gepa Jansen-Klaus, senior insurer of Scandinavian and CIS clients, vice-president for reinsurance at Swiss Re Europe (Germany), Caliber.Az reports.

"Azerbaijan is recognised as vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, ranking 73rd out of 181 countries in the ND-GAIN index. Temperatures in Azerbaijan are projected to rise faster than the global average, reaching an increase of 4.7 per cent by 2090, depending on the level of emissions," Jansen-Klaus told the International Insurance Forum on June 20.

She also noted that drought is predicted to significantly reduce the agricultural productivity of Azerbaijan and increase desertification and soil salinisation processes.

"At the same time, rising temperatures increase the likelihood of extreme precipitation events, causing flooding and possibly landslides. Rising temperatures in summer also increase the risk of heat waves, which can seriously affect public health and the country's economy," Jansen-Klaus emphasised.

To recap, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in an effort to address climate change.

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
