Alarming statistics: Georgia's death rate continues to outpace birth rate
Georgia has reported negative population growth for the first six months of 2024, indicating that the number of deaths has surpassed the number of births.
National Statistics Service of Georgia, known as “Sakstat" revealed that the country has been experiencing a decline in population since 2020, Caliber.Az refers to official data cited by Georgian media.
The statistics indicate concerning trends where the number of deceased individuals has exceeded the number of newborns.
Between January and June 2024, approximately 18,600 children were born in Georgia, while the number of deaths reached 22,300. This persistent negative growth is observed across nearly all regions of Georgia, with the exceptions being Adjara and Tbilisi.
The most significant gap between mortality and birth rates was recorded in the Imereti region, where the negative population growth amounted to 1,500. Following this, the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region experienced a population decline of 1,100, and Kakheti saw a reduction of 628 individuals.
In contrast, Adjara and Tbilisi reported positive population growth in 2022. Specifically, Adjara experienced an increase of 621 people, while Tbilisi's population grew by 457.
