Anti-Russian protest erupts in Yerevan during Lavrov-Mirzoyan meeting VIDEO
On May 20, an anti-Russian protest took place in front of the Armenian Foreign Ministry building in Yerevan, as top diplomats from Armenia and Russia held talks inside.
According to reports from Armenian media, demonstrators gathered with placards bearing anti-Russian slogans, voicing opposition to Moscow's role in the region and its perceived influence over Armenian politics, per Caliber.Az.
The protest was organised by a former member of parliament, Armen Babajanyan, a vocal critic of Russia’s policies in the South Caucasus.
The demonstration coincided with an official meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, who is on a working visit to Armenia.
On the first day of the visit on May 20, Lavrov, in an expanded meeting with Mirzoyan in Yerevan, emphasised Russia’s readiness to support Armenia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security, highlighting the longstanding allied relations and cooperation between the two countries. He underscored Russia’s role as a dependable guarantor of Armenia’s energy and food security, and stressed the importance of further developing bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, and regional integration platforms like the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and BRICS. Mirzoyan, for his part, supported Lavrov's remarks, declaring that Armenia remains committed to a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership with Russia across all areas of cooperation.
