Armenia confirms no plans to withdraw Russian border guards Security Service chief says
Armenia is not planning to address the issue of withdrawing Russian border guards from the Armenian-Iranian and Armenian-Turkish borders. Armen Abazyan, Director of Armenian National Security Service (NSS), told a briefing.
“There is no such decision at the moment,” he responded to a journalist's inquiry, adding that Armenian border guards are capable of protecting the state borders with Türkiye and Iran incrementally, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
Earlier in October, following a meeting between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Yerevan announced that, according to an agreement reached, Russian border guards will vacate the Agarak checkpoint. Starting in January, only Armenian border guards will be stationed there. Additionally, Armenian border guards will collaborate with their Russian counterparts in securing the state border with Iran and Türkiye.
