Armenia’s ruling party plans constitutional overhaul after 2026 elections

20 September 2025 12:22

Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party has announced its intention to initiate the process of adopting a new constitution following the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 2026.

This was outlined in the party’s programme, which was adopted at a congress on September 20, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

According to the programme, the government will seek an extension of its mandate for another five years in the next elections, aiming to secure a constitutional majority. If granted a vote of confidence by the public, the party plans to begin the process of adopting a new Constitution of Armenia through a nationwide referendum.

The programme comprises nine points built on the ideology of “Real Armenia” and the framework of the established peace with Azerbaijan. It also outlines the party’s commitment to intensifying efforts for Armenia’s accession to the European Union and maintaining a balanced foreign policy.

Additionally, Civil Contract pledged to continue striving for peace and good-neighbourly relations with all neighbouring countries, while working to institutionalise peace on a permanent basis.
