Armenian ruling party dismisses parliament speaker’s resignation
The Civil Contract party, as well as its parliamentary faction, is not considering the issue of the National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan's resignation.
The statement came from the Chairman of the Armenian parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, MP from the Civil Contract party Sarkis Khandanyan in a conversation with journalists on April 6, Caliber.Az reports, quoting Armenian media.
"The National Assembly elected a chairman in August 2021 and he is continuing in his duties. There are no other discussions in our faction," Khandanyan said.
He also stressed that he sees no need for Simonyan's resignation.
Armenian media outlets recall that earlier opposition MPs (Hayk Mamijanyan and Asram Krpeyan) said that while Simonyan was walking down the street, one of the passers-by called him a traitor. After that, the security guard twisted the villain’s arms, and Simonyan, according to the MPs, approached him and spat in his face.
The speaker commented on the incident only three days later, saying that the spitting could have happened accidentally during a conversation.
