Astana to host first meeting on Caspian Sea level decline PHOTO
The first meeting of a joint working group tasked with investigating the causes of the Caspian Sea’s declining water levels will be held in Astana as part of the upcoming Regional Environmental Summit, authorities announced on March 27.
The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Kazakh Ambassador Alim Bayel and Azerbaijan’s Presidential Envoy for Climate Issues, Mukhtar Babayev, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Embassy of Kazakhstan.
During the talks, both sides reviewed measures to protect the Caspian Sea ecosystem, discussed preparations for upcoming joint activities, and considered ways to support international environmental initiatives.

Azerbaijan expressed full support for Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s proposal to establish an international water organisation under the UN framework. Babayev highlighted that resolving water-related challenges carries ecological, economic, and security implications, making the creation of such an organisation a timely and necessary step for the region.
The Regional Environmental Summit is scheduled for April 22–24, 2026, with active participation expected from Azerbaijan. Officials emphasised that close cooperation between Astana and Baku on ecological and climate matters not only strengthens bilateral relations but also promotes sustainable development across the Caspian region.
