On May 14, 1948, the first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv, marking the end of the British Mandate for Palestine. The declaration emphasized the Jewish people's natural right to self-determination and affirmed the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel.
The declaration called for peace with neighbouring Arab states and appealed to the United Nations for assistance in building the new state. However, the immediate aftermath saw neighboring Arab nations—Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, and Iraq—launching military interventions, leading to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
The conflict resulted in significant demographic changes, including the displacement of both Jewish and Arab populations.
Internationally, the Soviet Union was the first to recognize Israel de jure on May 17, 1948, followed by other countries. Israel was admitted to the United Nations on May 11, 1949, solidifying its status as a sovereign state.
