Azerbaijan, EU discuss Baku’s role in evacuating foreign nationals from Iran
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas discussed Azerbaijan’s role in evacuating foreign nationals from Iran during a phone call on June 20.
The talks focused on Azerbaijan’s assistance in helping evacuate foreign citizens, including EU nationals, amid rising tensions following the Israel-Iran confrontation, Caliber.Az reports per the foreign ministry.
Both sides voiced concern over the security situation and stressed the need for diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis.
The two officials additionally discussed other bilateral and regional issues.
Over the past few days, since the start of Israel's strikes on Iran on June 13, Azerbaijan has facilitated with the transit of citizens from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, as well as individuals from the United States, Spain, Portugal, Finland, and the Philippines. All were evacuated through the Astara border checkpoint in southern Azerbaijan.
