Azerbaijan’s Hyrcanian forests included in UNESCO World Heritage List
The Hyrcanian forests of Azerbaijan are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The organization reported this on its page on the social network X (formerly Twitter), Caliber.Az reports.
It should be noted that these days Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is hosting the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, which will last until September 25.
The Hyrcanian forests cover the southwestern and southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Currently, this unique habitat is limited to the northeast of the Talysh Mountains and the northern slopes of the Elburz Mountains.
Excavations confirm that the Hyrcanian forests belong to the forests widespread in the northern hemisphere during the Miocene era which began 23 million years ago and ended 5.3 million years ago. The area of these forests declined sharply as a result of climate change during the Pleistocene period.
