Azerbaijan’s Ordubad city added to tentative list of Islamic World Heritage Photo
The ancient city of Ordubad in Azerbaijan has been included in the tentative list of Islamic World Heritage by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), the country’s Ministry of Culture announced.
The decision was made during the 13th session of ICESCO’s Committee on Islamic Heritage, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Azerbaijani authorities said the next step will be to advance the nomination for inclusion on ICESCO’s Representative List, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Ordubad, a historical and architectural reserve since 1977, was previously included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites on October 24, 2001.
To enhance the protection, promotion, and management of Ordubad’s cultural monuments, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on February 21, 2024, establishing the Ordubad State Historical and Cultural Preserve.
The city, renowned for its rich heritage and well-preserved architecture, is now poised to gain broader recognition within the Islamic world.
