Azerbaijan secures extradition of Interpol-wanted suspect
Azerbaijan continues cooperation with competent foreign authorities to detain and transfer individuals internationally wanted for criminal offences, the country’s Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
It noted that another person listed on Interpol’s international wanted list by Azerbaijan’s National Central Bureau, whose whereabouts had been established, was extradited to Azerbaijan on June 21 by the Ministry of Justice, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The individual, Azerbaijani citizen Elshan Ilham oglu Asgarov, is accused of participating in a criminal organisation formed in 2024–2025 with the aim of committing serious and especially grave crimes, preparing terrorist acts, and financing terrorism through the transfer of funds obtained by various means to accounts of individuals involved in armed conflicts outside the country, including accounts linked to the ISIS terrorist organisation (Articles 28, 214.2.1, 28, 214.2.6, 214-1, 28, 277 and 218.2 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan).
He was located in the territory of the United Arab Emirates and detained there.
Following a bilateral extradition treaty with the UAE, the Ministry of Justice, as the authorised body, submitted the relevant request and documentation and held effective negotiations.
As a result, an agreement was reached on his extradition to Azerbaijan.
Asgarov was brought to Azerbaijan by officers of the Main Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Justice and the Penitentiary Service and placed in a pre-trial detention facility based on a court decision ordering detention. The ministry said it continues to take necessary measures in this direction.
