Azerbaijan — the connecting link between China and Europe AnewZ documentary on the Middle Corridor / VIDEO
The AnewZ TV channel has released a new documentary dedicated to the Middle Corridor — a transport route viewed as a strategic alternative to traditional pathways between Asia and Europe.
As Europe seeks reliable channels for trade and energy supplies, China’s Belt and Road initiative continues to maintain a strong position.
In 2023, India presented its own project, yet its prospects have been overshadowed by a number of geopolitical crises: the war in Gaza, Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, Iran’s threats to close the Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint through which 20% of the world’s oil passes — as well as tensions between the nuclear powers Pakistan and India over the latter’s stance on Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the Middle Corridor itself is expanding. Following agreements reached in Washington between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the long-discussed Zangezur Corridor — a route through Armenia connecting Azerbaijan’s western regions with Nakhchivan and further with Türkiye — is being incorporated into the project. This step not only strengthens regional connectivity but also further integrates the South Caucasus into Eurasia’s trade map.
The film’s author, TV journalist Anastasia Lavrina, told Caliber.Az that part of the shooting took place in China: together with the film crew, she visited key logistics hubs from which goods are sent along the Middle Corridor and spoke with experts, who unanimously emphasised Azerbaijan’s special role.
“The Organisation of Turkic States also plays an important role in the development of the Middle Corridor, strengthening cooperation among member countries and turning this route into a true strategic bridge between Asia and Europe,” she said.
The documentary highlights that the Middle Corridor is not just about logistics. It carries Europe’s energy future — from oil and gas pipelines to the prospects of green energy. This route is becoming an artery of stability, resilience, and independence. At the same time, the film candidly shows certain challenges and the vast scale of work that many countries must undertake to realise such an ambitious vision.
