Azerbaijani FM briefs CIS counterparts on COP29 preparations UPDATED

07 October 2024 15:55

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov participated in a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS member states during his working visit to Russia on October 7.

While delivering a speech at the event, Bayramov discussed the prospects for collaboration between Azerbaijan and CIS member states in various spheres, including economy, trade, transportation, communications, artificial intelligence, and humanitarian efforts, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az.

He also informed about the preparation for the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

Bayramov emphasised that mutual visits and interactions among CIS member states enhance cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral formats. He highlighted the usefulness of the Council of Foreign Ministers as a platform for discussing issues of mutual interest.

Furthermore, he expressed Azerbaijan's strong commitment to the "Cultural Capital of the Commonwealth" initiative, which aims to host large-scale cultural events in conjunction with the designation of Lachin city as the cultural capital of the CIS for the upcoming year.

The foreign minister emphasised the importance of enhancing the international legal framework, conducting enlightenment initiatives, and strengthening human resources to effectively combat radicalism within the CIS member states.

He underscored the necessity of collaboration in the field of civil-purpose artificial intelligence, advocating for the development of this sector in accordance with international legal norms while respecting principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and ethical standards.

In conclusion, Bayramov highlighted the significance of joint efforts in addressing security threats.

He shared Azerbaijan's measures in this regard, including the first international conference on cyber diplomacy, which was held in September.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the participants of the CIS Ministerial Council meeting on preparations for the Baku climate conference COP29.

“Attended and delivered a speech at the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) held in Moscow. We discussed current issues on the agenda, as well as future plans and prospects of cooperation. Also informed my colleagues about preparations for the upcoming COP29 event in Baku,” Caliber.Az quotes Bayramov as saying on his X page.

COP29, scheduled for November in Azerbaijan, follows the decision taken at COP28 in Dubai in December 2023. Baku will host between 70,000 and 80,000 international participants over the two weeks. The UNFCCC, established in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, aims to mitigate the impact of human activities on the climate. The COP meetings, attended by 198 member states, are the decision-making body of the convention. The first session was held in Berlin in 1995.

In the run-up to COP29, the world will focus on finding cooperative solutions to the global climate crisis, with a particular emphasis on the role of human capital in sustainable development and resilience.
