Baku Initiative Group asks Pope Francis to support Corsica's decolonisation
The Baku Initiative Group has sent a letter to Pope Francis, requesting his support for the decolonisation process of Corsica.
"The history of Corsica is filled with cultural riches embodied in its language, traditions, and unique heritage. However, foreign domination often hinders the preservation of national identity and sovereignty,” Caliber.Az reports, quoting the letter.
The letter said, “Just recently, the Corsican people submitted a petition to the Corsican Assembly requesting the island be included in the list of territories to be decolonized. Furthermore, on November 19, 2024, Corsica was once again deprived of the right to speak its native language following a decision by the Marseille Administrative Court of Appeal.”
Through the letter, BIG asked Pope Francis to consider the situation in Corsica during his visit to the island on December 15. “We believe your presence will inspire hope not only in the hearts of Corsicans but also in all peoples suffering from colonization," the group wrote.
The Baku Initiative Group, an international non-governmental organization, is dedicated to fostering international partnerships in decolonisation and human rights. The group firmly and continuously supports the struggles for freedom and independence of those living under colonial and neocolonial rule, committing to solidarity and practical assistance.
Simultaneously, the organization contributes to women empowerment, human rights, environmental, and cultural issues.
