Baku Initiative Group vows to continue fight against colonialism in modern world UPDATED

29 March 2025 14:03

The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) is always ready to provide a platform for discussing and solving problems related to colonialism in the modern world.

BIG Executive Director Abbas Abbasov made the remarks talking to reporters on the sidelines of the international conference “Colonialism: Eradication of National and Religious Identity”, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

He stressed that the organization will continue to support political prisoners and fighters against colonial regimes on international platforms.

“Today I wear a garment with the image of Christian Thein, one of the most active citizens who waged an implacable struggle for the independence of New Caledonia. He was elected head of a political party a few months ago, but was soon arrested by the French authorities and deported to France without being presented with any legal grounds. This happened after a series of peaceful protests held at the end of 2024,” Abbasov said.

According to him, BIG continues to draw attention to his case on various international platforms and human rights organizations by issuing statements in his defense.

Abbasov also said that the Baku Initiative Group provides comprehensive support to the families of political prisoners. “Our work in this direction will continue,” he emphasized.

In less than two years since its inception, the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has already organized over 20 international conferences, making notable progress in the fight against colonialism and neocolonialism.

The announcement was made by BIG’s Executive Director, Abbas Abbasov, during the international conference titled "Colonialism: Eradication of National and Religious Identity," Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Since its founding in July 2023, the organization has grown rapidly, establishing cooperation with seven colonial territories within just four months, he said, adding that this number has now expanded to 15, reflecting BIG's increasing influence and reach in the global anti-colonial movement.

"In the short time since our organization began its work, we have made tremendous progress," said Abbasov. "Our ability to connect with so many territories affected by colonialism is a testament to the strength of our message and our commitment to creating a world free from colonial domination."

In addition to hosting numerous conferences, BIG has also evolved into a prominent analytical center, starting in 2024. The organization has published 10 comprehensive reports and two books, delving into the impact of colonial policies on local populations and their continuing effects in the modern era.

Abbasov emphasized that the organization's efforts have not only been academic but have also involved practical collaborations. "We have signed six memoranda of cooperation with organizations dedicated to combating colonialism and neocolonialism. Today, we will sign our seventh. This is a significant achievement for a young organization like ours."

To note, the conference, organized by the Baku Initiative Group, is attended by representatives of independence movements from territories under the colonial control of France and the Netherlands, including Guadeloupe, French Guiana, New Caledonia (Kanaki), Corsica, Martinique, Reunion, Bonaire, French Polynesia, Mayotte, Wallis and Futuna, as well as relatives of political prisoners.

For the record, the Baku Initiative Group, an international non-governmental organization, is dedicated to fostering international partnerships in the fields of decolonization and human rights.

The group firmly and continuously supports the struggles for freedom and independence of those living under colonial and neocolonial rule, committing to solidarity and practical assistance.

Simultaneously, the organization contributes to women empowerment, human rights, environmental, and cultural issues.
