Bonaire activists condemn Dutch policies as colonial pressure mounts

29 March 2025 14:00

The Dutch-imposed policies on Bonaire threaten the island’s religious and cultural values, undermine fundamental human rights, and reinforce colonial pressures, warned Robert Strix, Secretary of Pueblo Progresivo Uni (Bonaire).

"Approximately 80 percent of Bonaire’s population practices Christianity, and our local culture is deeply rooted in these values. However, the laws imposed by the Dutch authorities contradict the island’s traditional beliefs," Strix stated at the international conference "Colonialism: Eradication of National and Religious Identity," organized by Baku Initiative Group, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Despite colonial pressures, he emphasized that Bonaire's residents would continue to defend their culture, religious convictions, and right to self-determination.

"We will keep fighting for our right to live as we choose and will pursue this goal by all available means," Strix affirmed.

Human rights activist Joceline de Haak echoed these concerns, arguing that the colonial system deprives nations of their fundamental right to self-determination and forces them into external control.

Speaking at the same conference, de Haak pointed out that the loss of self-governance due to colonization has left Bonaire’s people unable to manage their own land or make key decisions about their future.

"In the past, when we were self-governing, none of this happened. We had control over our territory and our people. Now, all decisions are made for us by external forces, not by us," she stated.

De Haak stressed that colonial rule pushes indigenous communities into the shadows, compelling them to accept the loss of their independence. However, she affirmed that Bonaire's people will not surrender their inalienable rights.

"We will not be eradicated. Our faith and national identity are not for sale. Bonaire belongs to its people, and we will continue our struggle for self-determination," she declared.

For the record, the Baku Initiative Group, an international non-governmental organization, is dedicated to fostering international partnerships in the fields of decolonization and human rights.

The group firmly and continuously supports the struggles for freedom and independence of those living under colonial and neocolonial rule, committing to solidarity and practical assistance.

Simultaneously, the organization contributes to women empowerment, human rights, environmental, and cultural issues.
