Consulate efforts yield passports for Azerbaijani citizens illegally living in Türkiye
Steps are being taken to provide essential support to those who have migrated to Türkiye, currently residing there unlawfully, believed to be Azerbaijani nationals, along with their Turkish-born family members.
This initiative aligns with an action plan endorsed by the Azerbaijani government, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.
Starting from July 13, Azerbaijani citizens who immigrated to Türkiye in the 1990s and have been residing there illegally are being received at the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Istanbul.
When applying at the consulate, Azerbaijani citizens are provided with passports and civil registration certificates (such as birth or marriage certificates), along with other consular services. DNA testing is conducted onsite to establish parental rights for individuals lacking documentation.
From 2022 to 2024, measures in this area led to the review of appeals from over 7,000 Azerbaijani citizens. As a result, new ordinary passports were issued for more than 3,500 of them.
A significant number of Azerbaijani citizens have recently emigrated to Türkiye, many of whom have been living there without legal documentation. Recognizing the challenges faced by these individuals and their families, the Azerbaijani government, in collaboration with its consulate in Istanbul, has undertaken proactive measures to provide essential support and services.
