COP29 chief: Azerbaijan steps up preparations for COP30 with global climate initiatives

26 August 2025 09:42

Azerbaijan continues to intensify its efforts in climate education and international cooperation as the country prepares for COP30, said Mukhtar Babayev, President of COP29 and the Azerbaijani President’s representative on climate issues, in an interview with local media.

Babayev noted that the Summer Camp on Climate Change, which began on August 25, is dedicated to young people and this year is being held in Shamakhi.

“This camp started on August 25 and is dedicated to young people. Last year, the ‘Summer Camp on Climate Change’ was held in Baku, and this year we decided to organise it in Shamakhi. The conditions here are excellent. More than 40 representatives from 20 countries are participating in the event, as well as local young teachers. The main goal is to spread the ideas of ‘green education,’ that is, to convey knowledge about climate change, sustainable development, and environmental education to children and young people. In this regard, the camp is very useful,” Babayev stated.

He added that this is the second major event organised in Shamakhi.

“This is our second event in Shamakhi. Let me remind you that in July, a major meeting, the Shamakhi Retreat, was held here. At that time, representatives from more than 100 countries discussed issues of climate finance and the implementation of decisions taken in Baku last year. These discussions were very interesting and productive. By creating this format, Azerbaijan provides countries and representatives with an opportunity for a free exchange of views in an informal setting. After all, it is not always possible to openly discuss all issues at official meetings. Shamakhi is an ideal platform for such heartfelt and open dialogues.”

Speaking about the camp’s agenda, Babayev highlighted the importance of sharing global experiences.

“The topics discussed at the camp are very interesting. The experience of delegates from Africa is particularly valuable. As we know, there are serious problems with energy supply on the African continent: in some regions, half of the population does not have access to electricity. Imagine how far behind healthcare, education, and other areas are in the absence of energy. Our colleagues share various approaches and methodologies for solving these problems, and we share our experience. The Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan is also actively involved in this area. The initiatives launched during the pandemic continue today,” he explained.

Regarding preparations for COP30, Babayev emphasised that the work is progressing in an intensive mode.

“Preparations are underway in an intensive mode. A number of major events are ahead. First of all, African Climate Week will take place in September. Then, the African Summit will be held in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Following that, New York Climate Week will be organised ahead of the UN General Assembly. Azerbaijan has been participating in New York Climate Week for two years now — in 2023 and 2024. It is a very interesting event. Although the US government sometimes appears less active on the climate agenda, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, and civil society are very active. Representatives from nearly 200 countries are participating in the discussions, and we will also be represented there by the COP29 team.”

Babayev also spoke about Azerbaijan’s growing role in green energy projects on the global stage.

“In recent years, Azerbaijan has strengthened its leadership position in the international arena through projects in the field of green energy. Large-scale projects implemented on the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan have already become an important platform for regional cooperation. Joint projects with Central Asia, Türkiye, Europe, and neighbouring countries are of great importance both for the energy security of the region and for the development of the global green economy,” he emphasised.

Providing an update on the progress of implementing decisions from COP29, Babayev said:

“This is one of our main priorities. We are working on the preparation and implementation of mechanisms for the implementation of the decisions adopted. In addition, bilateral and multilateral cooperation with African countries is expanding. Our structures are very active in this direction, and these ties are developing successfully. I am confident that thanks to all these joint activities, we will achieve even better results both internationally and domestically.”
