To recap, the Developing Eight Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8) summit, chaired by Egypt on December 19, will feature a special session focused on Palestine and Lebanon, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has announced.
The summit, which brings together Türkiye, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh, will be a significant platform for addressing both regional and global issues. Founded in 1997 in Türkiye, the D-8 aims to strengthen economic and social ties between its members.
Abdelatty, who participated in the 21st Council of Foreign Ministers meeting ahead of the summit, highlighted the current geopolitical and economic pressures affecting the region. He noted the importance of the summit, especially as it comes at a time of unprecedented economic challenges and global instability.
"The timing is crucial, coinciding with regional and international pressures, and the devastating economic challenges faced by many countries," Abdelatty said.
The foreign minister also stressed the impact of ongoing conflicts, particularly the Israeli war on Gaza, which has caused widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis. He pointed to Israel's actions in Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon, which he described as violations of international law, prompting Egypt to call for a dedicated session on these issues during the summit.
The meeting, held in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, was attended by foreign ministers, including Türkiye's Hakan Fidan and Iran’s Abbas Araghchi, and followed discussions among D-8 commissioners earlier this week.
