Diplomacy remains Iran’s priority, foreign minister tells CNN Turk
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said diplomacy remains Tehran’s preferred path for addressing regional challenges, despite what he described as the absence of “serious grounds” for negotiations with the United States.
Speaking to CNN Turk during an official visit to Türkiye, Araghchi outlined Iran’s position on potential talks with Washington and broader regional developments.
Araghchi said that before any dialogue could take place, the existing atmosphere of threats and pressure must be removed. He stressed that progress would be possible only if there is mutual understanding regarding the content, format, and rules of negotiations.
At the same time, the Iranian foreign minister issued a stark warning, saying Iran would deliver a “shocking, harsh, and very powerful response” to any potential attack. He declined to comment on possible military support from Russia or China, emphasizing instead that Iran possesses all the capabilities necessary to defend itself. “Diplomacy,” he added, “remains the Islamic Republic’s top priority.”
Araghchi also reiterated his criticism of the European Union’s designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, describing the move as a “serious strategic mistake.” He argued that the IRGC plays a central role in combating ISIS and other terrorist groups, warning that Europe’s decision would only exacerbate tensions in the region.
Concluding his remarks, Araghchi said he had discussed with Turkish officials Ankara’s proposal to establish a regional alliance aimed at countering terrorism and addressing other shared security threats.
