Energy ministry: Azerbaijan sees major boost in green energy
The Azerbaijani Energy Ministry has announced that wind power plants generated 33.3 million kWh of electricity from January to July 2024.
During the reporting period, solar power plants produced 352.0 million kWh, and the waste-to-energy plant generated 152.7 million kWh, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.
The production of electricity from renewable sources increased by 1,327.7 million kWh, or 81.2 per cent, compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 2,405.3 million kWh.
Azerbaijan exported 522.1 million kWh of electricity from January to July 2024, which is 2.45 times less than the previous year. Azerbaijan imported 112.4 million kWh of electricity during the same period, marking a 28.7 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year. In July, electricity imports totaled 16.9 million kWh, while exports reached 78.9 million kWh.
Azerbaijan imports electricity from neighbouring countries such as Russia, Iran, and Georgia. These imports help to stabilise the national grid and ensure a reliable power supply. Electricity imports in Azerbaijan have fluctuated based on domestic production, demand, and regional energy market conditions.
Azerbaijan, traditionally known for its oil and gas resources, is increasingly investing in green energy to diversify its energy sector and meet international climate commitments. The country has set ambitious goals for expanding its renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Azerbaijan aims to significantly increase its renewable energy share. The government’s Energy Strategy and National Renewable Energy Action Plan outline targets for expanding solar, wind, and hydro power capacities.
Azerbaijan has substantial wind energy potential, particularly in coastal and mountainous regions. Projects are underway to develop wind farms, contributing to the country's green energy goals. With favorable solar conditions, Azerbaijan is focusing on solar energy development. The country has initiated several large-scale solar power projects, including solar parks and partnerships with international investors. Azerbaijan is exploring waste-to-energy technologies to manage waste and produce electricity. The construction of waste-to-energy plants aligns with the country’s environmental and energy diversification goals.
