Erdogan announces victory in elections to parliament
Even with the current results, the Republican Union won the elections to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a speech to supporters in Ankara on May 14.
He added that at present the majority of seats in Parliament belong to the Republican Union, Report informs.
“We have never gone hand in hand with terrorists. They did not follow the same path as those responsible for the death of our Kurdish brothers in Diyarbakir. We are guided by the instructions of the Almighty and our people. The fact that the election results are not yet known does not change the reality that we are ahead of our opponents by an overwhelming majority of votes,” Erdogan said.
Republican Union unites the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Great Unity Party (BBP), and the Welfare Party.
Meanwhile, a rally in support of Erdogan took place in Istanbul on May 14. As Caliber.Az reports, citing the Turkish media, the action started around midnight before the headquarters of the ruling faction: the citizens of Istanbul waved Turkish banners, lit fireworks, and listened to national music from the speakers, marking the end of the vote.
Despite the fact that their candidate Erdogan did not guarantee victory in the first round, several groups of rally participants set off fireworks. Over time, the crowd walked about 500 meters along the roadway but then turned back to listen to Erdogan's address from the capital Ankara on large screens. The police were on duty nearby, including special forces, but despite the fact that the protesters went out onto the road and burned fireworks, they did not interfere.
