Explosions rock Russia's Voronezh as smoke rises near military airfield PHOTO
Explosions and smoke were reported over the Russian city of Voronezh early on May 27, with the incident appearing to be concentrated near the “Baltimore” military airfield, according to the independent outlet ASTRA.
Citing OSINT analysis based on eyewitness footage, ASTRA reported that smoke was observed rising in the vicinity of the airfield, a known military installation.
Regional authorities confirmed that air defence systems had been activated during the incident. The governor stated: “Early in the morning, duty air defence forces detected and destroyed two high-speed targets in the sky over Voronezh. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties. Falling debris damaged a tyre service building and a utility structure.”
No injuries have been reported so far, though minor damage to civilian infrastructure was recorded due to falling debris.
Open-source data indicates that the “Baltimore” airfield hosts the 47th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment. Since February 24, 2022, the facility has been regularly used by the Russian Aerospace Forces to launch airstrikes against Ukrainian territory.
