Fake news alert: Misinformation campaign targets Caliber.Az over Aktau plane crash

13 February 2025 19:10

A new attempt to spread misinformation has surfaced, targeting Caliber.Az. A fabricated screenshot of a “news” report allegedly from Caliber.Az claims that birds were the cause of the AZAL plane crash near Aktau. The fake news has begun circulating online, and although the level of execution is clearly a low-quality Photoshop job, as experience has shown, it is often enough to deceive certain audiences.

In reality, Caliber.Az was the first to publish exclusive information, revealing that the plane was shot down by Russian air defence. This article remains publicly accessible and can be easily verified.

However, when the actual facts cannot be contested, some resort to creating fake headlines and texts, attempting to circulate them on Telegram via anonymous users.

This tactic is not new. Previously, a false statement allegedly made by the spokesperson of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry was spread, and now Caliber.Az is the target.

The crucial question to ask is: why now? The answer is clear—new data regarding the investigation into the disaster near Aktau is expected to be released soon. Unfortunately, the hope is that the audience will believe the fabricated image rather than checking the actual facts.

Therefore, we urge everyone to disregard these falsehoods and instead rely on verified information from Caliber.Az, available on our website and official social media accounts.
