Former Georgian security chief detained on bribery, corruption charges

23 December 2025 11:41

Former head of the Georgian State Security Service, Grigol Liluashvili, has been detained, Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze announced during a briefing at the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.

According to Gvarakidze, Liluashvili faces multiple charges, including bribery, involvement in so-called call centres, and irregular purchases by the kindergarten management agency, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media

The Prosecutor General said that the arrest followed joint operational and investigative actions conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office and the State Security Service, which uncovered evidence of Liluashvili accepting bribes in several criminal cases under their jurisdiction.

The detention follows a series of high-profile searches conducted on October 17, 2025, at the residential properties of Liluashvili, former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, former Prosecutor General Otar Partskhaladze, and several individuals connected to them.

The Prosecutor’s Office reported that the searches resulted in the seizure of electronic devices, documents, and large sums of cash. The State Security Service also revealed the identities of those whose homes were searched in connection with the investigation.

In subsequent developments, two associates of Liluashvili have also been arrested. On October 22, Koba Khundadze was detained on charges of laundering illegal proceeds on an exceptionally large scale, and the following day, Andria Liluashvili was also arrested in connection with the investigation.
