Georgian, Armenian lawmakers explore new avenues for regional stability
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has met with a delegation from the Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly of Armenia to discuss regional peace prospects.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral parliamentary cooperation and exploring opportunities for peace and stability in the South Caucasus, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
Papuashvili commended the ongoing cooperation between the legislative bodies of Georgia and Armenia, emphasizing that recent geopolitical shifts present new avenues for establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Sargis Handanyan, head of the Armenian Parliament's Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, welcomed the format of joint committee meetings, describing them as a valuable platform for discussing bilateral ties and regional developments. He underscored Armenia’s foreign policy priorities, which center on fostering regional cooperation and nurturing good-neighborly relations.
The discussions also addressed broader South Caucasus dynamics and prospects for regional peace. Handanyan commended Georgia for its role in supporting regional stability, notably highlighting Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s decision to facilitate a one-time, fully free-of-charge railway transport of Azerbaijani fuel to Armenia via Georgian territory.
The talks further touched upon ongoing Armenia–Türkiye negotiations and their potential outcomes for regional cooperation.
First Vice-Speaker of the Georgian Parliament and Head of the Georgia–Armenia Friendship Group, Giorgi Volski, also participated in the meeting, reinforcing the commitment of both sides to constructive dialogue and regional engagement.
