Georgian PM Kobakhidze eyes EU membership by 2030
Georgia will become a member of the European Union (EU) in 2030, said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during his address at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He stated that the government is dedicated to guiding the country in a manner that serves the nation's best interests, ensuring that all challenges are addressed so that the country emerges stronger and more successful than ever before, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
“We are optimistic that Georgia’s desire to become a full-fledged member of the European Union will be achieved by 2030,” Kobakhidze emphasized.
He continued with optimism, believing that united efforts would persist in supporting peace-building measures and sustainable development.
“As we look ahead to the future with a commitment to shaping a prosperous community together with our allies and partners, our united efforts will persist in supporting peace-building measures and sustainable development, “ Kobakhidze noted.
According to him, by doing so, Georgia will advance human dignity, not only for its citizens today but also for the wellbeing of all future generations."
Notably, since regaining independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Georgia has consistently nurtured its relationships with European countries, highlighted by the signing of a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement in 1996 and the introduction of visa liberalisation for Georgians in 2017.
Georgia’s application for EU membership in 2022, along with its attainment of candidate status in 2023, marks substantial progress towards strengthening ties with the EU.
