Georgian president supports new movement Vote for Europe
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili participated in the presentation of a new public-political movement, Vote for Europe.
The event was broadcast by the opposition Formula TV channel, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media outlet.
"There are no more than 100 days left until the parliamentary elections. This is both short and long enough for society to have its say. These are not ordinary elections, and this is not an election campaign, otherwise, I would not be here as president. This is a choice about the fate and future of our country. This is a referendum, with the Georgian society on one side and the government that has usurped it on the other," Zurabishvili said at the presentation.
The presentation was attended by expert Khatuna Lagazidze; theatre director Levan Tsuladze; conductor Nikoloz Rachveli; Georgian jazz singer Nino Katamadze; experts Lela Jejelava; Giorgi Rukhadze, and other citizens. One of the founders of the movement is Iva Chkonia, a businessman and president of the Association of Distributors of Georgia.
One key point of the manifesto, voiced at the presentation, is to support the youth participating in the protests.
Parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia on 26 October 2024. They are considered crucial as the ruling party holds power in the country, which operates as a parliamentary republic. The Georgian Dream party, which replaced the UNM, has been ruling since 2012.
