In Brussels, Azerbaijan said spurns Armenia's demand for recognition of territories in full Caliber.Az exclusive
During the recent round of talks in Brussels between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, European Council President Charles Michel, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Azerbaijani delegation raised the issue of the rights and security of Western Azerbaijanis and their return to their original places of residence in Western Azerbaijan.
Caliber.Az received the information from diplomatic sources.
According to the information, the wording "Western Azerbaijan", in turn, irked the Armenian side, which saw "territorial claims" against Armenia in it.
In response, the Armenian side was told that Armenia continues to keep eight Azerbaijani villages under occupation, as well as to maintain and financially support armed formations in Karabakh, which is not only a "territorial claim", but actually a policy of occupation.
Moreover, it was noted that Yerevan's attempts to introduce some "international mechanisms" in the Karabakh issue, as well as the use of Armenian toponyms to refer to Azerbaijani territories are also nothing but territorial claims and denial of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over the Karabakh region.
The issue of "West Azerbaijan" is solely a question of the rights and security of the Azerbaijani population, whose return to the places of their historical residence must be ensured by Armenia.
In the meantime, some other details of the Brussels meeting emerged.
Quoting sources familiar with the details of the Brussels negotiations, Caliber.Az further adds that "Armenia unsuccessfully tried to put forward a demand that Azerbaijan to recognise the territory of Armenia in 29,800 sq. km.
"In response, the Azerbaijani delegation made it clear that Azerbaijan is not the cadastral service of the Republic of Armenia, and determining the area of the territory of Armenia is not within the scope of the tasks and responsibilities of the Azerbaijani state.
"Moreover, as long as eight Azerbaijani villages are under Armenian occupation, and the Armenian armed forces are on the territory of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, any requests from Yerevan for the `recognition of the territorial integrity of Armenia' cannot be taken seriously."
